5 Minute Marketing Tips #14 – Mistakes Companies Make When They Market

Hello everyone. This is Tuesday’s Five Minute Marketing. And today we’re going to be looking once again at the main mistakes, things that people don’t take care of when it comes to marketing. And so today we’re going to be talking specifically about your reputation.

So your reputation online is absolutely important. In the last couple of videos we talked about a couple of other details, but your reputation is absolutely important. Looking at some of these statistics, 93% of people read online reviews about local businesses. 85% of people trust online reviews. 77% of consumers think that reviews older than three months aren’t relevant. And most consumers look at two plus review sites before making a decision. So the issue is that reviews in your reputation on your website and the reviews that show are extremely important.

Some things that are important, your average star rating, total number of reviews, review frequency, age of reviews, average ratings, how you respond and the reviews themselves. So there’s something called the trust tipping point. So when people are going to buy or use something online and they need to decide whether or not they use it, there comes a point where they finally decide to trust you and make that purchase or make that phone call. And it’s going to come through usually when they look at a review. So, just think a minute back, let’s say you’re on Amazon. You’re going to buy something and you go and look at Amazon reviews, you look at some other reviews off site, and then there’s just one review, and it hits you in the face. And you’re like, “Oh, yeah. Man, I agree with this guy. I’m going to go ahead and purchase it.” You add it to the cart and you purchase. It’s that trust tipping point. And if you don’t have any reviews in place at all, and they’re not current, well, that doesn’t look very good, does it? That makes things difficult and you’re not going to have a good reputation online.

So what happens is, and this is a little presentation that we do called Playbook that I’m taking this from, what happens is, let’s come down here and take a look. People, they tend to think that what happens is that people, they Google your site or they Google your product, and then they purchase. But this is the actual journey that happens. It could be a referral, it could come from TV, radio, or websites or any sort of referral. And it goes, and what they’re going to do is they’re going to look first at your online reputation, and to see what that looks like, and they’re going to compare it with others. So if you’re looking for a landscape company, I want to look here and I may see that there are more stars for Good Earth, or I may go and say, “There’s just not much information about this business online.” And they’re going to research more.

So the actual path that usually happens is not that people come to your website and take to action, but they’re going to read some reviews about you. That’s normally the way things work. And so they’re going to do look at your business, look at your reviews, look at your competitor’s reviews. And then if you are looking good, then they might call you. So it’s very, very important for businesses to make sure online their reputation is curated, that it’s on their site, and that it’s also on their different profiles and properties such as Facebook ads or, I’m sorry, Facebook page, et cetera, et cetera.

All right, we do we take care of this? Yes, absolutely. We do take care of this. It’s a minor detail that a lot of businesses overlook and it drastically and negatively affects your marketing. I can tell you stories upon story. There’s a company that’s an injury law company trying to do Google local services ads, and they can’t get phone calls off their Google local services ads. And it’s because they don’t have any reviews. So it’s something that they need to take care of.
